Gotta catch ‘em all? Your business can too! The new augmented reality app PokemonGo is sweeping the world with over 26 million active users each day, 10 million more than Twitter has daily. Targeting users of all ages, PokemonGo has already become the most widely downloaded game, with more than 20 million downloads. Not only is Pokemon go important culturally, it is also provides a great opportunity for companies to find new and innovative ways to attract customers to their businesses. Some companies have already started incorporating the game into their marketing — Check out three of our favorites!
Muncie Animal Shelter
If you are unfamiliar with the game, PokemonGo players must walk several kilometers to hatch Pokemon eggs and travel to different locations to hunt Pokemon. The director of this Indiana pet shelter, along with an intern, came up with the idea to use this foot traffic to their advantage. They worked together with the mayor of Muncie to create an ad on Facebook (which now has over 25,000 shares) that would enable PokemonGo hunters to walk adoptable dogs while searching for Pokemon.
Only an hour after the ad was placed, lines of adults and children alike appeared in the shelter. Hundreds of photos surfaced on social media, which provided phenomenal exposure for the shelter, encouraging adoption and participation.
L’inzo Pizza Bar
Also in the game, individuals can buy a “lure module” which attracts Pokemon for only 100 Pokecoins (or $0.99). Players can go to a lure module and wait for Pokemon to come to them instead of hunting the Pokemon down. Unfortunately, a lure module only lasts 30 minutes, but it’s great for business! L’inzo Pizza Bar in New York City spent $10 on lure modules and saw a 75% increase in sales. Using the lures will not only attract Pokemon, but customers as well.
U.S. Space & Rocket Center
The U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama has centered their discounts and promotions around the PokemonGo app. First, they offered a $10 discount for admission to visitors who showed the PokemonGo app. They have hinted at several other discounts revolving around PokemonGo, which is attracting an influx of visitors. Tim Hall, the spokesman for the U.S. Space and Rocket Center said, “We have had hundreds of folks out just in the past couple of days to catch their Pokemon and do their battles.”
